EXPOSURES captures the moods and experiences of fans and artists, both onstage and off. This time, Kate Giffin hits Halifax Pop Explosion with her Polaroid and 35mm and comes back with some magic.
Halifax Pop Explosion took place from October 19 to the 22. Scattered at different venues across the city, it’s a great excuse for musicians that used to live here to come home for the weekend and an excuse for those of us still living here to pull in musicians that would never otherwise swing through. Although Halifax is a city, it’s one of those places that feel like a small town because everybody knows everybody, so it’s nice to mix up the crowd and see some unfamiliar faces.
I shot 35 mm film and Polaroid at various shows over the four-day festival, and now that it's all been developed it's time to share the highlights. From intimate Polaroid portraits to crowd shots, to shots of soulful psych and soul showstoppers, it's what it feels like to be out there on the east coast, drinking beers and running from shows to shows.
Kyle Jukka of Montreal's She-Devils creates a soundscape with vintage samples out of his suitcase
Audrey Ann Boucher of She-Devils sang to an attentive crowd, where one member shouted out "Better than TV!" That definitely goes without saying.
Old and Weird take a seat on the cobblestones of the historic downtown, "Babysitters Club" style.
Old and Weird released an EP not too long ago, with a name too long to mention (seriously). Allison Higgins, with limited space, finds comfort by sitting on the PA.
Daniel Caesar opens for BADBADNOTGOOD at the Halifax Forum main stage.
Alexander Sowinski of Toronto's BADBADNOTGOOD sent well wishes and love to Charles Bradley before bringing in the jazz and hip-hop. They filled in last minute on the tragic news of his cancer.
Leland Whitty of BBNG lights some sage on stage.
Daniel Caesar joined BBNG for a few tunes near the end of their set before rushing over to the Carleton for his show stealer.
Robert Loveless dances around singing sweet electro-R&B with a full band at the Carleton.
Ambience at the Art Bar during Heaven For Real's set. Originally based out of Halifax, members are now scattered between Toronto, Montreal and home.
Heaven For Real L-R: Nathan Doucet, Cheryl Hann, Mark Grundy, Scott Grundy.
Heaven For Real mid-set. They released a fantastic weirdo alt-rock pop album on Mint Records this year called Kill Your Memory. Check it out
Halifax's Walrus share a laugh post-show at the Seahorse. L-R: Jordan Murphy, Justin Murphy, Keith Doiron, Justin McGrath.
Audience members Allie Graham and Camila Salcedo enjoy a secret show on Saturday that featured Kurt Inder, Chudi Harris, BEDS, Harley Alexander and the Universal Lovers, and Sunshine and the Blue Moon.
The aftermath — until next year!
